29명의 환자들은 아일랜드에 있는 재활 병원에서 4년간 본 연구에 참여했으며, 해당 병원의 음악치료사 2 명이 장기 의식장애(PDOC) 학제 팀(IDT)의 중요 구성원으로 참여하고 있었다. 본 연구는 PDOC 환자들과 그들의 가족들을 위한 IDT 평가 및 치료의 일환으로 음악 치료가 어떠한 영향을 미치는지에 대해 조사하였다. PDOC는 치명적인 뇌 손상 후 4주 이상 지속되는 반응 및 의식 감소 또는 부재를 의미한다. 본 연구는 사례 연구 시리즈, 의식 장애의 인식에 대한 음악 치료 진단 도구(MATADOC), 환자의 가족들과 IDT 구성원들을 대상의 질문지, 비디오 분석 등을 통합한 혼합연구 방법 접근으로 시행되었다. 본 연구에서는 임상의 측면을 설명하고, 연구 질문에 대한 결과를 도출하기 위해 세 가지 사례 연구를 제시하였다. 연구결과, 음악 치료가 IDT의 향상 및 가족 구성원들에게 긍정적 효과를 제공함을 확인하였다. 본 연구에서 개발된 음악치료 평가 및 치료과정의 통합을 통해 해당 병원내 상설 PDOC 음악 치료 서비스를 구축하였다.
