최근 항레트로바이러스 약제의 발전으로 인해 HIV 환자들이 더 오래 살게 됨에 따라 HIV 관련 신경인지장애(HAND)가 증가하고 있다. HAND의 증상은 종종 경증-중증 인지 손상 및 우울증과 관련이 있으며, 이는 HAND 환자들을 다루는 간호조무사들(CNAs) 사이에서 부담과 소진을 유발할 수 있다. 간호조무사들이 제공하는 음악기반 중재는 인지손상, 우울증, HIV 등을 가진 환자들에게 긍정적 효과가 있음을 보고하였다. 그러나 HAND와 우울증 환자대상으로 음악 중심 중재가 갖는 이점들에 대해서는 거의 알려진 것이 없다. 본 연구의 혼합실험에는 HIV 관련 신경인지장애와 우울증을 가진 12명의 요양기관 거주환자와 협회의 인증을 받은 음악 치료사들에게 교육을 받은 5명의 간호조무사들이 4주간의 음악기반 요양에 참여했다. 음악 보조 요양 중재법은 요양기관 거주 환자의 우울증 증상을 크게 감소시켰고 간호조무사(CNAs)에게는 개인적 성취감을 향상시켰다. 본 연구를 통해 HIV 관련 신경인지장애를 가진 요양기관 환자의 우울증을 감소를 위한 음악 보조 요양 중재의 효과를 확인하였다. 또한 본 연구는 향후 후속 연구들을 위한 HIV 관련 인지장애를 가진 환자 대상 학제적 접근의 방향성을 제시하고 있다.
