چکیده

Music listening interventions have been used for a variety of purposes including management of acute and chronic pain. Music listening studies generally have shown a mild to modest effect on pain reduction. Here we hypothesized that combining therapeutic suggestions for analgesia, comfort, and relaxation with music listening could be feasible and potentially achieve reductions in pain intensity and suffering. In this feasibility study 66 adults, age 50 or older with chronic low back pain, were randomized to one of three conditions: (1) music listening plus suggestion; (2) music listening only; or (3) pain information audio recordings control. Results showed successful accrual, 80% or greater retention, adherence of 91% or higher, and satisfaction ranging from 5.7 to 7.72 on a 0-10 scale for all groups. Results indicated trends for decreased pain intensity and suffering, but no significant difference was found among the groups at post-testing.  Only one adverse event was noted. Feasibility was supported and further research with a larger sample size is warranted.
