가창이 알츠하이머(AD) 환자들을 위한 음악치료 중재방법으로서 미치는 영향을 조사한 연구가 드물기는 하나 그 효과는 충분히 입증이 되어있다. 본 연구는 치매로 인한 언어 능력 감소 문제와 경증 및 중증 단계인 치매 환자들의 언어 능력에 합창이 미치는 효과를 살펴보는데 목적이 있다. 참가자들은 실험집단(n=16)과 대기(통제)집단(n=14)에 무작위로 배정되었다. 두 집단 모두 같은 일반 요양기관의 레크레이션 활동에 참여하였고, 실험 집단은 가창중심의 8회기 음악치료집단에 참여하였으며(2주마다), 데이터 분석에는 사전-사후 그림 설명 테스트가 포함되었다. 참가자들이 사용한 모든 언어표현 가운데 일관성이 없는 언어 비율에 대해 두 집단간의 비교에서 유의미한 차이가 발견되었다. 실험 집단은 언어표현에 있어 일관되게 부적절한 양상을 보이지 않았던 반면, 통제 집단은 참가자들이 사용한 전체 언어 가운데 일관성 없는 언어표현의 비율이 증가하는 양상을 보였다. 음악치료 실험집단이 전체 회기에 참여하는 동안 나타낸 언어 능력 매개변수에 대한 조사도 데이터 분석에 포함되었다. 반복 측정 결과, 실험집단 참가자들은 가창 능력 및 언어 능력의 향상을 나타냈다. 이러한 예비 결과들은 알츠하이머(AD) 환자들을 위한 음악치료계획의 일환으로써 가창이 언어기능을 보존하는 데 유의미한 역할 및 대화 능력 향상을 도울 수 있음을 의미한다.
